Cineplex SCENE and Scotiabank Scotia Rewards have merged to create Scene+, an enhanced loyalty program that gives members more rewards and exclusive offers. This expands Scene+ outside of just Cineplex movie theatres, with new partners that enable members to earn and redeem points on their everyday purchases.

Scene+ has a variety of key features, including:

• Earn points: Ability to earn points for every dollar you spend both at Cineplex, with select Scotiabank credit and debit cards, and at retail partners.
• Exclusive offers: Access to exclusive members-only offers, such as movie ticket discounts and special promotions.
• Bonus cashback with Rakuten: Earn 20% more Cash Back in points with Rakuten Scene+, earning you Scene+ points on your online purchases at hundreds of stores.
• Flexible Redemptions: Scene+ offers flexible redemption options with points giving set dollar-off purchases, so you can decide how to use your points.
• Use your points for more than just movies: With Scene+, you can use your points for experiences such as dining, travel, merchandise and more.

Anyone can join the Scene+ rewards program, and it’s free to join. You don’t need to sign up for a Scotiabank credit card to join Scene+.

To sign up, you just have to register online or in the Scene+ app. Once you’re registered, you can start earning points right away when making purchases. You’ll get your digital Scene+ card instantly, and you can start using it right away.

If you’ve picked up a physical Scene+ card at a store, you can link it to your account when registering online. If you haven’t, and you would like a physical card, you can request for a physical Scene+ card to be mailed to you. It will take 5 to 10 business days for the card to be mailed after your membership has been processed.

Groceries

Scene+ partners with Empire Company to allow members to earn points at participating grocery stores across the country at:

With these grocery stores, you’ll earn points based on digital offers and product offers, rather than a certain number of points per dollar spent. To check your offers and earn points, they have a dedicated website, My Grocery Offers, that shows point-earning opportunities.

For example, they might have an offer to earn 500 Scene+ points when you spend $40 or more at Sobeys, Foodland, or FreshCo. Another featured offer might be to spend $50 or more at Sobeys to earn 500 Scene+ points. Valued at $1 per 100 points, earning $5 on spending $50 is equal to 10% cashback!

Some examples of personalized offers might be to spend $5 on produce to earn 250 Scene+ points, or to spend $5 on meat to earn 250 Scene+ points. Since 250 Scene+ points are worth $2.50, that’s equal to 50% cashback!

Member-only offers include examples such as 400g of cheese for $4.47, compared to regular price of $5.47 at Sobeys.

Note that grocery offers must be loaded to your Scene+ card before purchase for you to earn points.

Home Improvement

Home Hardware is part of the Scene+ program, letting you earn 50 Scene+ points for every $50 spent online or in-store. Home Hardware is Scene+’s newest partner, joining the program in September 2023.

Restaurants

Harvey’s, Swiss Chalet, East Side Mario’s, Montana’s, Bier Markt, and Kelsey’s Original Roadhouse can earn you 1 point for every $3 spent.

Entertainment

You can earn 5 points for every $1 spent on movie tickets, food and drink concessions, and in-seat dining at Cineplex theatres. Plus, you can earn another 5 points for every $1 spent at the Cineplex store, where you can buy or rent new movie releases.

At Playdium and The Rec Room, you’ll earn 1 point for every $1 spent.

Scene+ Travel, Powered by Expedia, lets you earn 3 Scene+ points for every $1 spent on hotel, activities, and car rentals. You can pay for your Scene+ Travel purchases with your credit card or with your Scene+ point redemptions. When redeeming your Scene+ points on travel, you’ll also still earn points!

You’ll get your Scene+ points within six weeks of the completion of your travel. Scene+ points are earned on the purchase value only, and not on taxes and fees. Flights do not earn Scene+ points.

Select Scotiabank credit and debit cards can earn you Scene+ points on everyday purchases while giving you bonus multipliers on spending at Scene+ partners, up to 6 times the normal earn rate.

You can double-dip by earning points with your rewards credit card while earning bonus points through offers too. For example, With Sobeys' spend $50 to earn 500 points offer, you can pay for your purchase with a Scotiabank Gold American Express credit card to earn 6 points per $1 spent, which would earn you 300 points. Combined with the 500 point offer, you’ll earn 800 points for spending $50, worth $8! That can supercharge your Scene+ earnings rate.

Scotiabank Ultimate Package

The Scotiabank Ultimate Package bank account earns you 1 Scene+ point for every $5 spent on everyday purchases, equivalent to 0.2% cashback for using your debit card. For purchases at Cineplex, you’ll earn 1 Scene+ point for every $1 spent. This bank account has a $30.95 monthly fee.

Scotiabank Preferred Package

With the same earn rate as the Ultimate Package, this bank account plan has a lower monthly fee of $16.95. Debit card purchases with this account earns 1 Scene+ point for every $5 spent on everyday purchases or for every $1 spent at Cineplex.

For youth and students, accounts with no monthly fee also earn Scene+ points, with the “Getting There Savings Program for Youth” and “Student Banking Advantage Plan”.

The Scotiabank Scene+ Visa Card is a credit card with no annual fee that earns bonus points on purchases at Sobeys, Safeway, and other grocery partners, as well as Home Hardware and Cineplex.

The Scotiabank Gold American Express Card earns 6x the points on Scene+ grocery partners, and 5x the points on other grocery stores, as well as dining, which is equivalent to 5% cashback.

Rakuten is a cashback rewards program that lets you earn cashback on online purchases. Rakuten has partnered with Scene+ with a specialized program called Scene+ Rakuten. When you sign up for Scene+ Rakuten, you can get 20% more Cash Back in points when you shop with select participating retailers.

Instead of cash back earnings paid out to you in cash as a cheque or PayPal, Scene+ Rakuten cash back earnings are sent to your Scene+ account in the form of Scene+ points, at 1 Scene+ point for every $0.01 earned in cashback. Some retailers have weekly offers that can boost your cashback, earning you up to 20% more Scene+ points.

Rakuten has over 750 participating stores, including Amazon, Walmart, Apple, Best Buy, and eBay. For example, Rakuten offers 2% cash back at Apple for select categories, such as keyboards, cases, and other accessories. If you make a $100 purchase online at Apple, you’ll get 200 Scene+ points. Rakuten frequently has bonus cash back days which can earn you even more points.

You can redeem Scene+ points at Cineplex for tickets, snacks, drinks, and even gift cards. You'll get $1 off your purchase for every 100 points that you redeem on movie tickets, movie rentals, and Cineplex Store purchases. If you don’t have enough Scene+ points to fully cover your purchase, you can pay the remaining amount with cash or credit card.

For example, a standard movie ticket at Cineplex costs $13.50 at certain locations. You can redeem 1,350 Scene+ points, or redeem a partial amount and pay the reminder with cash. If you redeem 1,000 Scene+ points, you’ll only pay $3.50 for the movie ticket.

For food and drink purchases at Cineplex theatres, you can redeem 500 points for $5 off your purchase. Gift card purchases can be redeemed at 1,000 points for $10 off.

For example, a large popcorn costs $8.19 at certain Cineplex locations. You can redeem 500 Scene+ points to reduce it to $3.19, excluding tax, or you can redeem more points to cover the purchase. Scene+ members also get 20% off concessions at Cineplex.

How Many Scene Points for a Movie?

Scene+ redemptions at Cineplex are now dynamic based on the ticket price. That’s different from the old SCENE program, where Cineplex movie tickets had a fixed point cost. That also means that there’s no special benefit to redeeming your Scene+ points at Cineplex over other partners, as the redemption point value is the same.

Generally, you’ll need at least 1,350 Scene+ points for a standard movie ticket at Cineplex. The cost can be higher or lower depending on your province, which can also affect the sales tax rate, as well as your age. Seniors and youth may cost fewer points, while D-BOX or IMAX tickets will require more points.

The exact amount of points needed for your ticket can be seen when you select the showtime and movie in the Cineplex app or website. Note that online bookings have a $1.50 fee, which is reduced for Scene+ members.

Scene+ Travel lets you redeem 100 points for $1 off your travel purchase. If you don’t have enough points to cover your purchase, you can pay for the reminder with a credit card. You’ll earn Scene+ points for your purchase too.

For example, let’s say you’re booking a hotel stay in Toronto for $150, and you currently have 10,000 Scene+ points to redeem. At 100 points per $1, your 10,000 points will take $100 off your purchase. Your total would be $50, excluding taxes.

Since Scene+ Travel bookings earn you 3 points per $1 spent, you’ll earn 450 Scene+ points for your travel redemption!

Physical Rewards

Scene+ has a catalogue of items that you can redeem your points for through their Scene+ Apple online store and Scene+ Best Buy online store. You can also redeem your points for gift cards, both digital and physical cards, from over 60 retailers.

Financial Rewards

You can redeem your Scene+ points for account credit to your Scotiabank debit and credit cards.

You can also purchase travel using your credit card and apply Scene+ points towards the cost, within 12 months of purchase, at a rate of 100 points per $1, through their Apply Points to Travel option.

Cineplex CineClub

For $9.99 per month, a CineClub membership gets you one free movie ticket each month that rolls over if you don't use it. That means if you miss a month of movies, or if there’s no current movies that interest you, you can use those two tickets in the next month for an extra movie night. At $9.99, it’s also cheaper than even a single movie ticket too, which makes it a great value if you plan on going to the movies at least once every month.

Scene+ members also get 50 Scene+ points for each member ticket redeemed, discounted $9.99 tickets on top of their monthly member ticket, 20% off concessions, and no online booking fees. Signing up for an annual membership gives a bonus 1,000 Scene+ points, worth $10.

To maximize the value of your Scene+ points, here are some tips on how to earn them more efficiently.

• Earn points with your Scotiabank credit card: When you use select Scotiabank credit cards like the Scene+ Visa Card or Gold American Express Card, you’ll get bonus multipliers on top of the regular points awarded when spending at Scene+ partners.
• Take advantage of bonus cashback days from Rakuten: Rakuten offers bonus cash back at select stores from time to time, so you can earn double or even triple points when you make your online purchases.

Since Scene+ rewards are valued at a fixed 1 point = 1 cent, there isn’t a way to maximize the value of your points as they can be redeemed for the same value at Cineplex, grocery stores, hotel bookings, or gift cards. One way to double-dip is that you can earn Scene+ points on your travel redemptions on Scene+ Travel. However, there is one thing to keep in mind:

Know when to redeem your points: Your points are just like cash, so don’t redeem them for things that you wouldn’t buy otherwise.

While Scene+ is a popular loyalty program in Canada, there are also other competing programs that offer rewards and discounts too. These programs include:

Air Miles: This loyalty program allows you to earn points on purchases made at participating stores, which can then be redeemed for flights, vacation packages, discounts off purchases, and more.

Air Miles has been through some rocky waters, declaring bankruptcy in 2023. American Express ended their partnership with Air Miles in September 2023. Empire Company, which includes Sobeys and Safeway, used to partner with Air Miles before switching over to Scene+ in 2022. BMO is now the only issuer of Air Miles credit cards.

PC Optimum: With this loyalty program from Loblaws, you can earn points on purchases made at participating stores, such as Loblaws, Shoppers Drug Mart, No Frills, and Maxi, and redeem them for discounts on future purchases. Esso and Mobil are also partners of PC Optimum. PC Optimum credit cards are issued by PC Financial.

Aeroplan: The Aeroplan loyalty program from Air Canada allows you to earn points that can be redeemed for flights, vacation packages, merchandise, and more. Aeroplan credit cards are issued by TD, CIBC, and American Express.
