Key Insights:
- Total Loans vs. Total Deposits: $5,074B vs. $6,762B
- Banks: Excluding subsidiaries, 26 federally regulated domestic banks, 20 hold over C$1B in assets
- Credit Unions (CU): Hundreds operate across Canada—3 are federally regulated and the rest provincially regulated. Around 45 have assets over C$1B.
- The Big Seven: Big Six Banks + Desjardins hold 94% of deposits and 91% of loans
- Loan-to-Deposit Ratio: Big banks hold more deposits than loans, but smaller lenders often show the opposite
- Foreign Banks Subsidiaries: Not included; hold around C$31 billion in Canadian assets
