It was founded to serve miners and their families in a local coal mining community and was influenced by cooperative ideas associated with the Antigonish Movement.
The credit union has operated from its Plummer Avenue location since 1948. Today, New Waterford Credit Union serves members as a single branch financial cooperative offering personal and business banking, borrowing, mortgages, credit cards, investments, and related financial services.
It has a patronage rebate for eligible members. Member deposits are protected through the Nova Scotia Credit Union Deposit Insurance Corporation.
