Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announces the extension of the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy program until the end of August 2020. The Government of Canada will be releasing more details in the coming week.

Below are important definitions to help with your calculation:

  • Pre-Crisis Period: Is the period from January 1st, 2020 up to March 15th, 2020 (exclusive)
  • Arms Length Employee: Any employee who does not have ownership or is directly related to someone who has ownership of the business or corporation. Ownership can be defined as someone who has control over the buisiness or controlling share over the corporation.
  • Furlough: An employee who is not working but is still getting full or partial pay. For example, an employee who is away on vacation with pay.

Did you have furloughed employees during claims period?

  • individual (excluding trusts)
  • partnership,
  • non-profit organization,
  • registered charity, or
  • Canadian-controlled private corporation (including a cooperative corporation);

As well as:

  • have an existing business number and payroll program account with the CRA on March 18, 2020; and
  • pay salary, wages, bonuses, or other remuneration to an eligible employee.
